Attaching 4x4's lengthwise to each other


If installing a support 4x4 column that will be approximately 16' long, can I use available hardware to connect (2) 8' 4x4's rather than use (1) 16' 4x4? The (2) pieces will always be in compression but I don't know if this is an accepted method of doing this or not. Columns will be supporting a cantilevered upper deck on a house. Please advise.

Use a 16' 4x4
Better to use a 4x6 or larger as 4x4 will warp & twist
There is more then just compression load on these

You had better look into the building codes. It isn't very likely the code will allow even a solid 4X4 to go that length to support an upper level. I'm sure a spliced [anything] would be out of the question also.

I think I would go with a 6 X 6, start with two 10 footers, lap cut, glued and bolted but I think a single 16 footer would be cheaper.

If your local Building Department is using the 2006 (most recent code), a 4x6 will not work. A 6x6 will go to the bottom of the deck joists--- 14' maximum. Anything taller has to be a larger post. Here is the code to date, bottom of page 7: http://www.awc.org/Publications/DCA/DCA6/DCA6.pdf

I suggest you ask your local building department as code acceptance varies locally.
