Adding partition wall in w-t-wall carpet greatroom

want to add 4' high by 12' long partition wall in greatroom, (vaulted ceiling), which has wall-to-wall carpeting. Have a vertical bulkhead to fasten one 4' end of wall. the opposing end will be free-standing except for the base/sole/footer. This is basically for deco, to break down the greatroom's floor area. (partially sectionalize) will the wall be too unsecure? will the sheetrock give it some stability? will the joists underneath, (in the crawlspace), need to run horizontal or perpendicular to the proposed wall?
