We are about to add drywall to our celling and walls in the garage. There are diagnol 2x4s that appear to be wall supports running in the 4 corners of the celling of our garage. The home was built in the early 60s. Can you advise is this truly wall supports, and if so, is there a better way to maintain the integrity of the structure without these?
they are wind bracing. The add some shear strength to the wall.
I would consider replacing them with let-in 1 x 4 bracing or let-in angles that sit flat to the wall surface to allow the board to mount flush to the stud faces.
Short of cutting off a body part, the worst that can happen in woodworking is manufacturing really nice looking kindling. --- Quoted from lenaitch
