Wiring Problem

I have an outlet in my living room and a light in my garage that have stopped working. Upon further investigation with a multimeter I found that somehow both the black and the white wires are now hot in this outlet. Here are the AC voltages I measured:

white to black: 2.5 V
black to ground: 124.3 V
white to ground 121.9 V

There are other lights and outlets on this breaker that still work and I have not done any electrical work that would have caused this outlet and light to stop working so I am confused about what is going on. Anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like you have a break or loose connection in the neutral run.

Don't know if this is your issue but I had a GFCI outlet go bad on me with the result that white became hot everywhere downstream. Took me a while to track down the cause. I kept measuring black to ground and getting 120. Couldn't figure our why nothing worked until I measure white to ground and also got 120. Replacing the GFCI solved the problem.
