Wiring new outdoor wall light: what fittings & wire?

I need to mount a new outdoor wall light on an extension room. I'm good with wiring, just never done exterior work before. There's enough of a crawlspace that I can run a cable from where I have power to the base of the exterior wall where I want the light. So I drill a hole there, and then what? Do I use exterior 1/2" conduit with a an elbow joint going inside the wall a bit, and run the 14-2 NM cable inside that? But I recall somewhere that you're not supposed to run NM inside conduit. Does that mean I need a box in the crawl to splice from NM to wires pulled through the conduit? If it's NM can it be standard or does it need to be another like wet area grade?

I could probably figure my way through what exterior conduit, fittings and box to use, but suggestions on that also would be appreciated.

If you can fish a cable inside the wall you can use NM cable if allowed in your area. Use a flush mount box or a siding box to mount the fixture.

Getting that cable up through an exterior wall is not going to be easy. Presumably you have insulation in that wall. If you can drill up through the floor and bottom plate try pushing a flexible rod up through the wall.
Cut the opening for the box on the exterior. If you can find some 1/4 PVC pipe, tie some nylon cord to it and push it up through the wall. Depending on how much height you have in the crawl space it should be flexible enough to get in and stiff enough to push through the insulation. You can then use the cord to pull the cable in.

Running NM cable in conduit is fine but not out side. You could use conduit with type UF cable outside.

Come thru the wall with a short piece of conduit to an LB fitting, conduit up the wall to a fixture box.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking. Fishing the wall is cleaner, but I have no idea what's in there, most of the time when I fish an old wall I encounter a cat. This is maybe only 40 or 50 years old, and might have insulation in there too. Since I don't want to get into interior wall work the easiest thing is a conduit up the exterior wall from the foundation.

Use a 4" holesaw for the exterior light's octagon box, it does a beautiful job. Do not mount the box inside the hole yet. Leave your wife at the 4" hole.

Climb into your crawl space with a 1/2" auger, a short 10' fish tape, and some 14/2 NM. Drill the hole through the bottom plates to access the interior of your exterior wall. Push the fish tape straight up, and tell your wife to fish her hand around until she feels the fish tape through the insulation. You stay in crawlspace, tell her to wait while you tape your NM on your end of the fish tape, tell her to pull it until she has about the 1' of the cable.

Done. It's that easy. No need for conduit. NM is installed in walls all the time....its what's it's made for......no conduit needed.
