What IS this?!?

I have this random cable coming out of the wall in my apartment. The person I am renting from does not know what it is for, and neither do the people who actually own the apartment. Anyone know what this thing is for? Is is randomly sticking out of the wall in a place where most people would put their tv, or maybe a sounds system.

Post a picture. A good, clear picture.

Where are you located?
Could be an old surround sound speaker connection

Hmm

Located? Well, I live in Provo, UT. The cable thing is located in my living room. I'll try to take a clearer picture when I get back from work later today.

I thought it might be speaker/audio related, but the cable goes into the wall, and I have not found anything coming out of the wall, anywhere else in the apartment. Hidden speakers inside the walls?

Is it near the baseboard?
How far up the wall?
Old intercom system?

Other wire holes could have been mudded/painted over years ago

It is about 1 1/2 above the ground, in the corner of the living room. Doesn't look like it's has anything to do with the baseboard. In the bottom picture, you can see that the paint is different. It looks like there was some kind of box attached to the wall right next to where the cable comes out of the wall. The size of the box would be approximately 1 squared foot.

I was going to say thermostat until you said how low it was. It looks it was connected some device that was fastened to the wall(note the paint marks).

What kind of a wall is that? It looks like sheet metal that the wire is poking out of.

I think that's a plastic wall grommet for cable in a regular wall, joed.

It looks like an old communication jack prior to the RS 232 era.

Possibly an old stat/valve control for an old radiator? Might have had hot water radiant heat at one time. The wall opening does look odd like it is a thin piece of sheetmetal used as a patch and then textured over.

Note: now I see the grommet!

Can you zoom out a little with picture. Maybe the paint outline can give a better clue.

My bet is that its a telephone cable. There area a zillion different types of phone jack terminals.
This one is similar to the 'BIX' terminal that I used to favor.

Looks like an antenna rotator control cable

The grommet and connector are the giveaway. Antenna could have been on a tower, on the roof or in the attic.

Do you know where the other end is? That could be a big clue as to what is was for.

That would make a lot of sense giving where the op has indicated this is located behind where a tv or sound system would go. I'll bet the op will find the other end disconnected somewhere in the attic, or cut off somewhere outside on or near the roof. Probably an interface box mounted to the wall to make the connection from the in-wall wiring to a remote control.

It does not look like a speaker wire connection, the wires are too small and are the wrong colors for a TYPICAL speaker wiring setup. I would suspect that this is a control line for something, low voltage/low current.
