Trying to build a Woodburning Unit to practise Pyrography
I know this isn't Home Improvement, but it has to do with equipment typically used in a home, like Nichrome wire and Soldering Guns.
I have this idea to cannibalize a Soldering Gun and use the transformer in there to fab up a DIY Woodcarver. I have the Gun, and also cannibalized some wire out of an old coil-type electrical heating unit, but I must be missing something, the 2" of wire I attached to the Soldering Gun's stubs are not giving me much heat. I even tried reducing the gauge of it by pinging it with a ballpeen hammer. I had a notion of controlling the Soldering Gun's transformer with a solid state light dimmer, thereby reducing the voltage to the secondary, and consequently the heat output.
The VAC out of the secondary is about 1.8 VAC, which I suspect is my problem. I guess the Gun is designed for a steel tip, and the Nichrome wire won't work.
