Tracer Wire

I am installing a lawn sprinkler system. Should I run a tracer wire with my water pipes? How is it done? Is it simply a piece of wire in the ground or does it need to be tied in to some electrical source?

What kind of pipe????

PVC or black flex?

No it has nothing to do with power so just zip tie the wire to the pipe as you go and your done. You are putting the wire there so in the future you can find the pipe with a metal detector and carefully dig around it.

It's black poly pipe. Where can one even get tracer wire?

I'd think any old scrap wire would work, but I could be wrong?

I wouldn't even run tracer on that kind of pipe. Just run a metal fish tape down the pipe when you want to find it. Way cheaper and equally good.

Or like he said just the cheap wire.

A local discount store around here sells 100' of cheap speaker wire for $1.00, would that work?
(emphasis on cheap, as in thin)

Well instead of running a wire with the pipe. You can just dig up one of the heads and run the fish tape down the pipe. This will allow you to find it with a metal detector and locate the pipe.
here is what a fish tape is. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...7&marketID=101
