Strange outlet/switch issue...

I have an standard outlet that the TOP is controlled by a light switch. Last week it sparked and went dead!

I checked the power to the outlet and of course there's none to the top one so I replaced it and now there's power to both.

My problem is this...the outlet works but the switch doesn't control either outlet! What gives? I've checked the switch and there's power to it on both sides.

HELP!

I did NOT remove the brass tabs (I don't recall actually seeing them). The outlet I replaced was there before I bought the house 3 yrs ago.

I just looked at the one I replaced and the tabs on the RIGHT side were removed.

well to have the top switched only, like you had before, you will need to remove the brass tab. this allows each half of the outlet to be separated and wired independently. They are on BOTH sides, but only the BRASS (hot) side should be removed by twisting with a pair of pliers.

Well, I tried breaking off the tab and now the top outlet isn't working at all again, just like the original issue.

Any other ideas?

Well, after I removed the tab, I didn't have power to the top outlet again. I do have power to the switch so I assumed it was ok.

It's strange because it stopped working out of the blue.

Ok, you have power at the switch but do you have power leaving the switch?

I have power to the top of the switch and to the bottom of it ONLY when the switch is turned on.

Did you remove the tab on the hot(gold screw, black wire) side. If you removed the tab on the white wire side that would cause your problem.

On the brass side you should now have 2 wires going to that side
One is hot all the time - for the bottom outlet
The other is the hot from the switch - only hot when the switch is on
**Please note this could be a white wire - check to see what color that wire is from the switch that is only hot when the switch is on

Currently I have a BLACK and RED wire on the brass side and 1 WHITE wire on the silver side. This setup has not changed. Both outlets were working before I removed the tab but neither worked with the switch. I checked the switch and have power to both top & bottom screws.
