The wire has to be rated for in-wall usage. The rating pertains to flame retarding and not biodegrading after a few years.

The gauge depends on usage; some experts recommend 12 gauge for high powered stereo and home theater speakers where the run exceeds 30 feet. Eighteen gauge is probably the smallest you should go and that would be pretty much limited to background music or radio or intercoms.

You can use Romex, although if the end comes out from the wall and continues a few feet to the amplifier or speaker (as opposed to having binding posts or screw terminals on the wall), it looks ungainly.

Wire must be rated for in wall use.

Use speaker wire rated CL3 for in-wall use, 16awg up to 10 feet, 14awg or 12awg up to about 30 feet.

DO NOT believe the hype that you need exotic cables such as Mons*** Cable.
