Smart light switch help

Good day,

I have a LED light controlled by two wall switches. I want to change one of the switches for a smart switch. The current switch is connected with a white, black and red wire. The new smart switch has the white, two black wires but no red.

I really do know nothing regarding this, how do I connect the two, all help is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Smart light switch help

It depends on the switch. However, I would highly recommend purchasing a smart switch with a "companion" switch that can be used for your three way application.

If you don't, if the one switch is "off" it will cause the smart switch not to work.

You could also bypass that second switch and install a blank over top of it.

Which way works best for your application and we can provide feedback from then.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking of just putting a blank over the second however for now I would like to get this one installed, realizing that if someone changed the second switch it will not work.

Well the typical way to do this is you leave the normal switch on the line side of power. You need to identify which switch is on the always hot side of the switch. Once you find this you will leave this switch alone.

You will then install your smart switch in the other location. The red will provide power, the white is neutral. You need to tell us what model smart switch to determine the exact purpose of the two blacks but my guess is its for a three way install.

If you only have the 3 wires in that box, the white is not neutral and the switch will not work.

Good point...I didn't read enough into that. If they had to use a white wire as a switch leg then that means they didn't carry the neutral through the switch. That might make it not possible to use your switch without adding a neutral.

Might want to look into a smart bulb because of this.
