Remodel recessed lights - Insulation contact vs non-insulation contact

I am putting in some recessed lights in a ceiling that does not have insulation. Now, a guy in the electrical section at Home Depot told me that it would be ok to put in the insulation contact lights (remodel type) even though there won't be any insulation around them. Is that accurate? He did say, however, that you can't do the opposite, which would be to put a non-insulation light in a space where it will have insulation touching the can.

He said something about the non-insulation lights having a built-in thing that makes them cut off if they get too hot, and that you wouldn't have that problem with the insulation contact.

No offense to any of you that work at HD, bug I just wanted to get some other opinions on this subject since it's hard to tell who knows their stuff at those stores.

IC cans may be used for either application. IC cans have thermal cut outs.
