Re: Question about generator hookup!!

Chandler48, thanks for your reply. My generator will supply constant 5500 watts with a starting 6875 surge. I have lp gas with city water so no water pump. I can run water heater by itself, or window unit with central air unit fan to circulate through house. I can run fan for lp furnace along with most lights and refrigerator. Yes I have to turn off and on some breakers but overall this works really well. I already had the wire, hookup inlet and 30 amp breaker. This was the cheapest route and still meet codes and be safe for me.

and a 30 amp power inlet installed in my detached garage.
The inlet (and generator) should be on the outside of the garage.
From the manual
Quote:
Never operate in an enclosed area or indoors! NEVER use in the home, in a vehicle, or in partly enclosed areas such as garages, even if doors and windows are open! ONLY use outdoors and far from open windows, doors, vents, and in an area that will not accumulate deadly exhaust.

Re: Question about generator hookup!!

Yes I took the reliance 30 amp inlet box down in garage and am in process of installing on outside wall close to the main house panel. I will resuse the 10/3 wire. I have a 30' outdoor generator cable to run generator behind house for noise levels.

I did have the inlet box installed in garage but used my heavy duty 30' cord through window that I purchased on amazon to run generator outdoors.

I would never use generator indoors...thanks for all great tips.

Re: Question about generator hookup!!

It appears your interlock is not requiring you to turn off the generator power when you turn the main back on. Maybe I'm not seeing it all.

To turn the main back on, you must first slide the bare metal plate to the right. That in turn forces you to turn off the breaker at the top of the right side column, which would be the back feed from the generator.

Re: Question about generator hookup!!

I see the slide action required, now. Thanks RAL238. I was looking for a vertical movement when the main was turned on.

Fooled me as well. I thought the slide action was up/down until I looked closer and saw it was sideways.

BTW those are not legal in Ontario. The presumption is that if the cover is off the interlock is not in effect. It needs to be 100% foolproof.

It works as is made for, there is no physical way to have both breakers on at same time. Nothing is fool proof If someone removes panel front, most people don’t even bother with any safety features. It’s safe and meets requirements in my area. I’m very pleased with, obviously some people always make negative comments.

Not being negative. I have nothing against interlocks. Just pointing out that in Ontario they are not legal.

Re: Question about generator hookup!!

Just reading through Matt's multiple threads on generators and want to add I don't believe they are legal here in Maine. It was 20 years ago when I inquired but answer was NO.
