Question....

Ok I'm trying to figure out what the previous owner of my house has wired up. And I've got a very odd situation.....

There are three wires coming into the socket, two wires I know are the live wires and third 'mystry' wire I've followed and disconnected both ends of .

The weird thing is that there is still ~25 volts ac on it when meassured aginst ground.
Where as when meassure aginst one live wire I get ~90 volts when meassured aginst the other I get ~35 volts.
And both live wires show only ~60 volts aginst ground.

The only thing I can figure is there might be a short somewhere in system. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Thanks

Measure again with an incand. lamp across your voltmeter.

About the same.
But after some diging in the attic found some useful info, looks like when they installed the fan in the house they cut through the wires going to the socket and never reconnected the ground.
So I'm not really sure that the ground wire is in fact leading to ground....
But then why does it show a voltage potentinal from the live wires to 'ground' if it doesn't really go anywhere?

The more I look at this the more tempted I am to just rip it all out and redo it myself.....

Ok I pulled down the wire from the attic, it's three wire + ground all twisted.
I connect 120 volts to two of the wires, and then messure the voltage on the third wire to the ground wire. Now remeber they are hooked up to NOTHING, I can clearly see both ends.
I get a reading of 20 volts.... is it possible that the fact it's a twisted wire mean it can generate a current on the extra wires... and if so would that current be enough to interfer with a current carried over those wires?

Call Faraday and ask.

Ugh what a pain. I wonder how the previous owner couldn't have noticed that half the plugs weren't providing useful voltage... or maybe he just didn't care...
