please help. led question

I'm a little confused about wheather or not i can place the resister far away from a 5mm led running off of the 12v electrical supply from a car. Sadly i don't have all of the specifics, but basically most led's i have found prewired come with the resistor very very close to the led. Almost as if it replaces the leg. I am working on a project with sone space restricions and heat issues. I would like to basically build an led light bar and run about 20 small wires from the led's to the resistors a few feet away. Is this possible without having something cstch fire or burn out? Also, is there any way that i could just run one hot wire over all of the resistors in parallel and continue it on to all of the leds? Or does each led need its own resistoe? Thank yiu in advance.

I also apologize for the rambling and what't i'm sure is a lot of misspelled words. My phone has something wrong with a cuple of buttons and i am u able to make any corrections without starting all over
