panel in barn

am looking to have a panel in a barn for power. curious, I have heard that if it is a low number (in this case, 6 slots) that I dont need a dedicated main switch at that location. I have also heard if not real close to master panel/main switch, that it needs a main shut off switch.

Which is it? about 100 feet away from main unit.

A detached building must have no more than 6 switches to turn all the power to the building. So a non main breaker panel with 6 or less breakers meets this code. If you have more than 6 breakers then you need a main breaker or disconnect.
