That would be great but where is the building OP is asking about located?

All depends on the jurisdictional requirements.

Where are you located..
  • What State,
  • What Country,
  • What County,
  • What City

Why do you think he is the only one to know the code?

He was the only one to answer.
Based on the original question, it seemed that this was a garage at home and therefore not applicable to the garage at home.

"accepted" ?? Required is in the code, and also a maximum. You only need one. Maximum depends on ... oh, see post below !!!!

The post by stick\shift answered a lot more than you think.

I know the answer to your question, but no one here knows what your question is yet (including me)... Bro !

Is this commercial , residential, required outlets, or maximum outlets ??

What's that have to do with anything? Every comm/ind is different, with
qty and placement of outlets based on usage of the space.

You should simply put in as many outlets as you expect to need in the
locations you expect to use them. Maybe a couple extra where you're
unsure. Done.

The question was simple, but I can rephrase it for you (because you are special), how many outlets do you put on a 12/2 wire with a 20amp breaker, when you don't know what will be used on that line ?

You seem to be very "emotional", good for you ! The question isn't going to have a specific answer, because the usage is unknown.

Hi Miata Boy, I've been casually watching this thread to see if anyone could satisfy you with an answer. Although many clear answers have been given none have met your needs. Thus I think you have won and can go away feeling happy.

If there is a different answer you want someone to invent, just post it and all will hit your like button and be done.

Whoever told you that is.......well........wrong. As many have said above, in residential, in the US there is no limit per NEC (assuming no local limits, such as in parts of Georgia apparently), and in Canada it's 12 total outlets (which is not just receptacles). So where you got 13............**shrug**.

BUT, in commercial or industrial, it may be different and is beyond my knowledge, but very well within the knowledge of many MANY people on this forum and on this thread. So IF this application is Comm or IND, then OP needs to SAY SO.

And there are a lot of people that "finally know the code" and I don't remember anything about 180 watts per.

I guess next you're going to tell us that all circuits are limited to 80% of OCD rating...?

So you intentionally asked a question that "would have no specific answer" because YOU were too vague in the question?

Unfortunately, people usually assume on a DIY/homeowner's forum, that the question will be about residential, so there IS a specific answer, depending on where you live, which you don't bother to say.

Also, unfortunately, many people who've been here longer than 10 posts, and have proven themselves, don't like to be "tested" by trolls like you. SO....poof...be gone. Google it....ask your AHJ (if you know what that is)...ask whoever you want. But if you want answers here, I'd suggest losing the attitude PDQ.

I put 12 on one circuit. IMO, it's not about having something plugged into every one of the receptacles, it's about having the flexibility to plug something wherever you want.

Well, if you know the answer please tell us.

However, be certain to cite the NEC.
