Old Zinsco Service Panel - No ground?

So I'm installing a mini split ac and while looking at my service panel I noticed no grounding wires on the neutral bar. I also don't notice any copper wire going to the neutral bar. Does this mean my panel has no grounding/neutral bar not bonded?

Also does anyone have any idea how to pop out knockouts from the inside of the panel? I had no luck with a hammer and flathead.

Help is appreciated :biggrin2:

Google Zinsco recall.

I don't see any ground wires in that panel anywhere. I do see a white cable that appears to be bolted to the chassis under the two red wires.

Yeah I know about the recall. Interesting thing is, it seems my surrounding neighbors haven't replaced their panels yet either. Our homes were built in 1965. Nonetheless, I know it needs to be replaced but right now can't afford it. Replacing the panel is likely a project for next summer.

Not bolted just seems to be a dirty old cap on it. I'm assuming although *usually* you can place neutrals and grounds on the neutral bus in main service panels this is not one of those cases?

If so, looks like my mini split air conditioning won't be grounded for a little while :vs_whistle:

The label should show the location of the bond screw or strap.

What is the wiring method used? Metallic cable would not have a grounding conductor from that era.

All wiring in the house seems to be mc cable. For the mini split air conditioner I am using UF-B in loctite conduit since it will be outdoors.

The only issue is grounding the condenser.

Check for continuity from the neutral to the case.

To get the knockouts out.............first turn the power off.
Drill a hole about 25% the size of the knockout centered. Screw in a long screw and/or bend it back with a punch. Wiggle a few times and it will break off.
When done and hands out of panel.......turn power back on.

This is not a cap. It is lug, but I can't tell if it actually bolted to the panel.

I tried this earlier but my bit wouldn't bite due to limited space and the angle :vs_mad:
