Off Center Vanity Light

So I have a pancake style j box for a vanity light in my half bath. It is a about 2” or so off center. It is stud mounted and just to the left of it is the vent pipe. My question is: Is there some sort of vanity lights that help in this situation with an off center mount? If not does anybody have any other suggestions? The photo shows the stud and pipe. Thanks in advance

Re: Off Center Vanity Light

Not sure what they call it... but there are light fixtures that are sort of a long stretched out box with bulbs often coming straight out.

Rather then mounting directly to your pancake box....they have a frame you mount to the wall and as such do not have to be centered over your Jbox.

You can center them relative to your sink, and the "box" will cover the span over your jbox, and your wiring just runs in the box.

I'd go to the bigboxers or maybe a lighting store and examine the different fixtures that will provide that offset and also cover your jbox.

Yeah that’s kinda what I was think I just didn’t know if they had a separate mounting plate like you said. I’ll have to go pick one up and see. Thanks for the quick response.

Re: Off Center Vanity Light

There should be room to mount the thin pancake box in front of the vent pipe. It can be mounted to the drywall if your fixture is not too heavy. The pancake box should fit behind many fixtures.

Re: Off Center Vanity Light

I canít ever recall seeing a pancake remodel box. AFAIK, you always screw them to wood. You can either surface mount them over the drywall, or cut a hole to mount them directly to the wood.

I believe MTN was referring to a Hollywood light bar.

There are a few vanity lights that are made with a similar bar.

Re: Off Center Vanity Light

The long multi-bulb vanity lights are typically a backplate and then the decorative chrome/brass cover snaps over-top. You could simply drill new box mounting holes into the backplate. See below example.

Damn good job brric. Not sure why I never looked but they actually have the perfect one on amazon. Problem is that the wrong box I already in place so I’ll have to do some thinking. Thanks for the awesome tip. Not sure why I never looked

Re: Off Center Vanity Light

Then there are LED lights, such as https://www.amazon.com/Lithonia-Ligh...%2C391&sr=8-17
which may be suitable.

Re: Off Center Vanity Light

I know your pain. Had the same thing last summer with Pine paneling instead of drywall. The vanity chosen and countertop ended up being slightly bigger than expected causing a 1-2" off center of box. Wife commented on it so many times I had to fix it. 4 hours of work removing vanity then pine T&G in the middle of a wall, moving box 2" to left, then new T&G boards fitted with blind tongue and I was done. I was mumbling to myself the entire time.

Next time I think just rough out NM cable in the spot and mount box afterwards after all variables sorted out (i.e. vanity installed). Maybe put a backer 1x or 2x horizontally before finish (drywall or other) so you have something to mount the pancake box to later.
