Hello! i am trying to install a new switch for my ceiling fan. the current switch turns on the fan and light and doesnt allow seperate control. it has a read and purple wire going into it.
The new swith allows for seperate light and fan control. it has a blue, red, and black coming out of it and a green ground.

You need to change the cable between the light and switch to add an additional wire.

Here's another alternative. Just installed one for my brother a few weeks ago, we ran an extra wire, didn't realize this switch came with a canopy module too, so that third wire is now doing nothing

Yup, the canopy module is included and this will allow you to control each device independently with only a black and white between the switch & fan.
