Need help with a ceiling fan

I am up grading a house I bought and the previous owner capped the elec. box in the living room and the best I can tell robbed the power to wire up 3 can lights above the fireplace. I plan to install a ceiling fan, but need help in wiring it. Can I rob power back to the box in the ceiling and then route power to the swith box in the wall that has a open slot for a switch? The can lights are on a dimmer slide switch, and a cap over the other hole in the box.

sounds like you need to trace some wires to know what you have exactly. Then we can talk methods, but in short yes we can do that.

You don't have to rob them. The can lights know how to share :P
