My lights were flickering!

Last week we noticed several of our lights were flickering. One bulb of three on the ceiling fan, etc. As the days passed, more flickering. Finally, we started having power dips (temporary interruptions). Yesterday, a friend who is a lineman, came by and checked out the outside power supply connection at the junction box and the breaker box. No problems found and voltages were steady.

Overnight the interruptions became more pronounced, up to 10 seconds in duration.

Today, I researched the breakers and identified which users were flickering. As it turns out, two circuits were involved...both on the same Breaker! It is a dual 15 amp Square D tandem model. I bought a new replacement and swapped them out. Problem solved. $18.11 total.

Thankfully, the problem was resolved without the house burning down. This is the first electrical problem we have experienced in the 30 years that we have lived here.

Note: I did shut off the 100 amp main breaker before swapping out the breaker.

I wonder if the lugs on the breaker were just loose? Not unheard of for a breaker to stop working. Usually they fail in the off position, thankfully.

I don't know but the new one solved the problem. The old breaker had to be at least 15 years old, and possibly much older than that. It had the two breakers end to end. The new breaker has them stacked on top of each other.
