Location of Recessed lighting

Hi and happy Thanksgiving! We are remodeling a kitchen and will use Halo rough-in 5" IC lighting, not remodel kits. We have removed the old plaster, left the lath an intend to run 3/4" furring strips to help smooth out any bumps in the ceiling. The question we have is how far from the finished wall is the center of a 5" can given that we have upper cabinets? Another question is for a 5" can above the sink in front of a windwon, how far from the wall (with the window) should this be centered? Thanks again!

I rig mine up with a power cord & plug them in & hold them up
That way I can move them around & see how the light shines on the counter
My 4" cans are about 12" out from the upper cabinets
I have under cabinet lighting

yoru're a rock star Scuba_Dave thanks...one more if i can. we have an island running that is ~3'6" away and running parallel to the cabinets (with the sink facing the window). If we put our 5" cans 12" from face of upper cabinets, that puts the cans about where the counter ends. While we plan pendants over the island, would you still adivise the current location or move them at all toward the space between the two sets of cabinets. Going to see the latest Warren Miller film, Dynasty, now so further response will be tomorrow.

I think I'd move them towards the cabinets then
That's weird - because 12" out from the upper cabinets my cans are right about at the edge of the base cabinets - just slightly in
That way if we are standing at the counter the light is not behind us

Are you using these recessed to light the countertop or the room?

You want the lights over the counters not to be casting your shadow when on the counter when you stand at the counter, so they will usually be about at the edge of the counters.

Pendants are the jewelry lighting, used as night lighting, etc. so often have a smaller bulb in them. Put a can between the pendants to throw good light directly down on the island when needed. Switch the pendants separately from the cans.

Lights under the upper cabinets is recommended to provide good work lighting.
