Re: Lighting Suggestions Needed

@Colbyt @Sdiver2489

There are 2 large lights over the cook island (Orange Shape)

The oven is a slide in gas downdraft.

I also realized I had an extra 36" cabinet in the drawing and the stove is 36" but is closer to 30" ( 32") opening in actuality.

However, All the spacing shown between cabinets will stay the same.
When transferring the floor layout to the paper I just added a cabinet.

Why not make the can lights in the kitchen 3' from the wall like the one outside the peninsula? The grid design will look better cosmetically. Also, to follow up on my previous issue raised, are you sure the two placements work with the joist spacing? Based on what you are doing here I would assume the joists run parallel to the peninsula?

The reason being I need task lighting over the counter. at 3' away when I stand in front of the counter I cast a shadow over what I am cooking or working with.

The ceiling joists are not an issue at all.

I must disagree with you 18-20" from the wall is the correct placement for cans over a counter. I've done this more than once and live with it daily. Three to four feet off the wall is also correct for general lighting with and 8 or 9 foot ceiling.

I don't disagree with you. I think earlier I mentioned the possibility of using 4" cans as task lighting above the counters. Right now he's trying to split the difference between task lighting and general lighting and I'm playing devils advocate since he asked for alternate ideas.

Right now he's 24" off the wall to the cans for task lighting...not quite what his picture shows. So the can light beyond the peninsula is 1' off the line of the others. I question whether this will look like a mistake was made or if the task lighting purpose will be obvious. Secondly, I'm not sure we know the distance between the two rows of cans at the moment. It looks like it might be a bit beyond the recommended 4-4.5 feet between light sources.

The inspiration pictures shown do not show task lighting done by cans except for the sink. because they all have upper cabinets. In fact, the one picture shows maintaining the can "grid" even though one light could have been used as task lighting. Just trying to think of all possible scenarios to make sure he's thought it all through (which it sounds like he has). I'm guessing he's using wafer LED style lights if obstructions are no issue.

Maybe a grid of 4 (2x2) can lights might work with small 3-4" cans as task lighting in addition on a separate switch. That would add light and function. Again, its all personal preference. Plus the drawing is still difficult to get a sense of scale.

Re: Lighting Suggestions Needed

All the lights on the Right are 24" off of wall. Spaced 5' apart. with the exception of the sink light.

the other can light to the top of the drawing and the left are spaced to mach the right side but are 3 ft off of the wall.

The pendant lights over the bar are equally spaced over the bar.

The pictures are a reference for a pendant light over the sink and some ideas of lighting over the cook area. in the 11ft long island in the drawing.

What is the spacing of the cans in the left/right direction?

@Sdiver2489

The Cans that are over the counter are task lighting and the other 3 cans by the bar and to the left are room lighting.

They are all 6" can lights

Remember that I have to pendant lights over the bar and I am either thinking to ceiling flush mounted fixtures over the 30" island or one large hanging one kinda like the pictures I posted for reference.

I like the idea of a large hanging light over the island for interest and extra light. If you do that I think that's great. I don't care for flush mount lights as the light they provide is minimal and not directed in a pleasing direction.
