Knob and tube

What causes no power to switches when breaker isn't tripped.. no gfci's are tripped but everything else on breaker is working... I have 2 3-ways switches that all of a sudden have no power to them... it's an old house with knob and tube wiring but panel is up to date with breakers

Loose wires , faulty switchs , faulty cables.
Have you checked for power at the switchs ?

Brand new switches, they were working 5 minutes prior. They are 3 way switches, I didn't hook up the correct way the first time, working but not in the correct way. Turned off breaker to rewire the switches. Hooked them back up, turned on the breaker and no power. Everything else on the breaker is working.

I checked the voltage, not just the switch

The switches are wired wrong.
There are 4 screws on each 3 way switch. 1 green, 2 brass, and 1 black or dark colored.
The green is the ground.
The 2 brass screws are the travelers to go between the 2 switches.
The darker ones or black attach to the line (hot) on one switch and the load (light) on the other switch.
A lot of times, the line and load are in the same box, and a 12/3 is run to the 2nd switch location. Just make sure that you wire it appropriately into the circuit and you will be ok. It helps to mark the white wire in the 12/3 with black or red tape on both ends to signify it is used for power in this case.

When did 12/3 become a Knob & Tube wiring method ?

OP, it would help if you post some pics of the wiring at each location.

Also, was the electric installed prior to 1923 ?

True, but that info was given for the benefit of other readers also.
I do agree that pics of the wiring would be advantageous.
