How much Box Recess

How far back from the face of drywall can the face of an electrical box be recessed?

I nailed up electric boxes with the face sticking out past the edge of the studs based on the little depth tabs on the box. Now I though instructions for drywall say that the face of the drywall and the face of the electrical boxes should match. But those tabs seem to be sized based on 3/8" drywall... and I'm using 1/2".

I don't have the NEC in front of me, but I believe the measure is 1/16"
