Question

Help changing fluorescent lighting in Bathroom and Kitchen


Hello All,

I am in need of some help here please. I have lights that look similar to this

What tools do I need to either install pot lights or track lighting in place of these ugly fluorescent lighting.

I understand how to remove them, but once I take the ballast down will I need to install new wiring or will I have to use new wiring from the junction box?

Any insight that anyone has is most greatly appreciated.

That looks like fluorescent strip lights above drop in panels. Those panels are not rigid enough to support recessed lights. Do you plan on taking down the drop ceiling?

New wiring will need to run between the fixtures as well as from the source to the first recessed.

Hello, thanks for the quick answers guys.

Yeah it is strip lights above the drop in panels and I plan on taking down those old wooden panels and replacing it all with drywall.
I know how to do the drywall install etc but am not sure about about the electric work that is necessary.

You will need to install new wiring between the new recessed cans
You may be able to re-use the main power feed in the ceiling
All depends upon where everything is located now, where the new stuff will be going, any slack in the line & if you want an accessible junction box somewhere in the ceiling

All the recessed I have seen for the last several years all required 90 degree rated insulation. If your non-metallic cable does not say NM-B, it is only 60 degree rated.

All you need to do is read the IES files, some are right in the catalog. Not hard to get.

Very good point, I have some leftover 12-2 that is only rated NM
