heater contactor location

I plan to regualte my 220 volt, 23 amp shop heater with a thermostat. The line is 10 ga. with a 30 amp breaker. I plan on adding a 30 amp, 2 pole 24 volt coil contactor between the breaker and heater for the thermostat to contol. The transformer for the 24 volt thermostat will be rated at 20VA.

Question: Does the "code" allow me to put all connections ( incoming and outgoing 10 ga. wires, contactor, and 24 volt thermostat wires) inside a large junction box or must the contactor be inside the heater housing?

Thanks.

The contactor and associated enclosure can be mounted anywhere between the source and the heater.

The 24 Volt wiring can enter the same enclosure, but those conductors' insulation should be rated for at least 240 Volts unless there is a solid separation barrier installed within the enclosure.

It's pretty common to install the contactor and transformer in a J-box somewhere near the heater. Usually, right above the thermostat.

If there's a disconnect switch, it's best to install the J-box between the disconnect and the heater.

kbsparky----I don't understand the 24 volt insulation rated for 220 volts. The 24 volt wires going into the J-box to the contactor will be from the thermostat. Can you explain?
