Well that is some good information!

I'm a little scared of 6500K although I do hear people like them. I might be more comfortable at 5000K. What is the reason behind 6500K?

The point about glare does make sense.

Would it be worth looking into the T8 HO stuff or just regular T8? I just really don't want the brown fuzzy dim lights that are on display in the stores.

Also not looking to really build a custom system, looking for off-the-shelf stuff; I don't want to over-think it. Which, I'm not over-thinking YET because I'm not quite ready to hang them. Few more days and it'll be over-thinking it. LOL

Cletis -- I haven't bought anything yet. I'm in the planning part of it right now.

Anyone care to take a stab at lighting up that drawing I posted? I'm curious what you'd suggest.

Thanks for all the info so far!

Nobody wants to see my garage. It is big (714 sq), but it is in poor shape and needs a lot of work. I've got a generous 2-car with a walled-off shop in the back and a generous, gabled attic that can be stood up in in the middle . Everything is old, dirty and rotten. I need a new roof and new walls. I had no plan for the lighting, I am just fixing up what is already there, on the cheap.

OP, I like 5000K. I'd stick with standard T8. I don't really have experience in planning lighting layout. Just find the formulas and get enough lights to cover it. I hope that you can find a lighting store that will order in some luminaires that suit the use. Generally, they can be ordered with what ever you want for ballasts. If you can wait for them to piggy-back your order on another one, you might not have to pay much for the shipping. If you have to go to a big box store, you might get stuck with instant-start which sucks.

I did not realize that you have pretty high ceilings. If you want to keep the layout that you have, and think that you need more light, you might look for luminaries that hold three or 4 lamps. (That would mean that you'd have 6 or 8 lamps in each 8' length that you propose, rather than 4.) A good reflector like Cletis suggested would be better than multiplying tubes too much. Adding good reflectors does not add that much cost up front. You will have lower lifetime cost compared to more lamps. Maybe he can help with layout. Again, if you find a lighting store that will happily deal with a small customer like you, they can order them with high ballast factor ballasts to boost the output some if you think that you need that.

Oh bummer!

So I stopped by HD today to check out what else was available in T8. All the damn T8 fixtures were turned off.

These are the options. The higher end T8 fixtures are $60; the T5HO is at $70. I assume there's got to be something better somewhere else that people actually like. I'm getting frustrated.
