Florescent lights on a dimmer swtich

I put a new circuline florescent light in the spare bedrooms in my house. They work great but my wife said she didn't like how bright they were so I bought a dimmer switch and installed it.

With the dimmer switch installed the light flickers a lot and the dimmer function doesn't even work. As well a high pitch squeal comes from the switch.

Now that I think about it I've never installed a dimmer switch on a florescent light ever so my question is can you put a florescent light on a dimmer? or is that not possible. Do I need a special bulb or switch or am I just SOL?

Thanks

You can use dimmers with fluorescent lights providing that either or both the ballast and bulb are dimmable. I would doubt that this is the case with your circleline bulbs.

It will be much easier to change the fixture to incandescent. Florescent dimmers are more expensive than fixtures. Or live with the fixture you have minus the dimmer.

If your ballast on the luminaire did not say about dimmer useage then you can not use the dimmer at all it will really affect the performace.

But if this is a screw in bulb or whole luminaire which you got from big box and there are few that do stated can use with dimmer however that one item you have to watch out with it.

Merci,Marc
