Exposed romex?

Is it ever OK for romex to be exposed? The unfinished ceiling beams in my garage are 12' high. I plan on sheet rocking the walls but I will leave the ceiling open.

Would it be a flagrant code violation if I secured the romex every four feet to the sides or the bottoms of the beams to feed the light fixtures and door openers?
I'm gonna hurl myself against the wall
because I'd rather feel bad than not feel anything at all

This is fine, and actually pretty common in garages. Just secure the cable like you were going to sheetrock. IE: NOT on the bottom of the joists.
