existing ceiling fan wiring old house

I have an older house and went to replace an existing ceiling fan that wasn't functioning properly. When I pulled the old one the wiring has me stumped. There are three sets of wires. all three white wires were together and apparently feeding the fan. all the bare wires were grounded to the box and heres the kicker for me, all three black wires were tied together and taped off. One other red wire came down for the fan also. Please, whats going on

The red wire is the switched power wire from a switch. They used a three wire cable to the switch. Power and neutral to the switch on black and white. Switched power back from the swtich on the red. At the switch they have the ability to continue power on to other devices as there is a source of unswitched power AND a neutral.
