electrical wiring

How do you wire a red, black and white three wire cable to a fluorescent fixture with only black and white leads to the ballast?

I suspect you are going to have to put a bit more effort into this one.

Using a voltmeter, verify that there are 0 volts from white to ground. Also verify 120 volts from black to white and/or 120 volts from red to white.

Then connect the white wire of the cable to the white wire of the fixture and connect either the red or black wire (must have measured 120 volts) to the black wire of the fixture. Cap off the other loose wire.

If the fixture does not have a built in switch you will want to add a switch, disconnecting the black wire from the wire going to the cable and connecting the switch between these loose ends. If the switch is some distance away and connected by a new previously unmentioned 2 wire cable, connect the colored wire of that cable to the black wire of the fixture.
