dc charger wiring

I am replacing the plug on a 12v dc cord for a car heating pad. How can I tell which wire is + and which is - ? One has writing on it, and the other a series of dashes no + anywhere.

Do you have the original plug? Open it up and see which wire is connected to the center pin of the plug (positive) and which wire is connected to the outside sleeve (negative). That's the way to be sure.

If not, I would assume that the wiring is positive and the dashes is negative. But I always like to check to be sure.
