Connecting Xmas light timer

Original timer (busted) has two black wires - one in and one out to outside lights (copper ground wire is present but not connected). New timer has three wires: black, red & white.

I've determined which black wire is hot, but I don't know whether to connect it to the red or black wire on the new timer. And should I just ignore the white?

thanks ...

That white wire is required to be connected to the neutral. Ignore it, and the new timer won't work properly.

Do you have any white wires tucked in the back of your outlet box? It should connect with those ...
