cold in canada

I am trying to wire in a 240 baseboard heater into a bunkie. The subpanel in the bunkie is fed by 12/3 from the main cottage running off a 40 amp breaker. The subpanel currently also runs lights and 2 plugs. I have run 12/2 wire from the heater to the subpanel, but now i am stumped. Help? Thanks.

First thing would be to change the 40A breaker to a 20A breaker, #12 is only good for 20A.

Does your heater have a build in thermostat, if not how do you plan on controlling the heater.

How big is the heater? That #12 wire is probably too small for this. It must be protected by a 20 amp breaker. Change the 40 amp out ASAP.
