can't get electricity to outlet

Hi all,
I installed a 15a gcfi outlet to a 20a wire. when I turned the breaker back on after installing it the green test light lit up, but I couldn't get electricity through the outlet. I hooked up the ground, black, and white wires to their respected places.

I tested it with a voltage meter where I hooked up the wires (so basically tested the wires) and got 120v.
I hooked them up on the bottom of the outlet, not the top with the yellow tape around it. I'm assuming this isn't the problem?

any advice on what I'm doing wrong?
before I hooked this up the breaker was tripped due to a jammed up fan I believe but it is no longer connected.

the breaker is a 20a, and seems to not quite stick in the panel right.

any advice?
thanks!

Re: can't get electricity to outlet

The breaker needs to be compatible with the panel.

Did you reset the gfi?

so to respond to your questions. I plugged in a set of lights that I tested on another outlet, no light. I plugged in a power strip, nothing lit up.
idk if this should've worked or not but I put the volt meter into the outlet holes and couldn't get anything.

as to the breaker, the breaker has always been there, it's probably 20 years old I would guess.

Re: can't get electricity to outlet

Some new gfci's come tripped and have to be reset when power is applied.
Also, some have lights to tell if there is power, and others show the gfci tripped.
