Can I Use a Shorter Ceiling Fan Down-Rod

I have a fan that came with an 8-inch down-rod which is too long. Can I substitute it for a shorter one--a 4-inch one? Will the ceiling fan still function the same? What's the down-side of doing this?

the only thing to consider with a down rod change is: will it hit something because it is closer to the ceiling.

other than that, you can generally change the drop as you desire or needed.

The only time I used the shorter downrod if the ceiling is flat or very shallow pitch.

As long you keep the fan blades 7 feet above the floor level you will be ok { most ceiling fan manufacters recomened that keep the blades at 7 to 9 feet level depending on how it set up }

Merci.

Thanks for the good advice..... We did it and both fans work great! We used the drill press to drill the 2 holes in the rod. Sorry it took so long to respond.
