American China junk

Some time ago, I had a very nice swag lamp that needed a new chain and cord. I purchased an install kit from one of the box stores and proceeded to install.
I could not believe what I read in the instructions. The "rip cord" instructions stated that it didn't matter which screw either wire was connected to!
This was a Westinghouse kit, you guessed it, MADE IN CHINA.
On the package was a toll free number so I called a voiced my concern. The gentleman from westinghouse agreed with me that it did matter and the proper steps would be taken to correct the problem. He gave me a thank you and that was it. I don't know if he did anything.
If this item was UL listed, as it stated on the package, how did this happen?

China has no building codes or anything like that, so it really does not surprise me. Sadly 99% of the stuff we buy is made there. :/

I would be scared to see what their wiring practices are there. K&T is probably a luxery. :P

China makes what the marketer/customer wants and to his specs. The big boxes buy and sell based on price. They may have been made in a Westinghouse plant in China. I am sure you could get a better kit if you looked around and were willing to pay a higher price.

Red Squirrel -

China does have building codes and health codes. - Remember the tainted baby formula. The top 2 executives were executed within 2 months. In the U.S., they would be in a country club white collar "prison" for a year, but have access to recreational failities. The real crime the executives did was distrute something to the Chinese public. If you have not been there, you can't realize how high tech and quality oriented they are. Wiring is NM or UF, depending on the use. Buick supposedly sells more cars there than in the U.S., but they are third in imports behind the superior cars like Mercedes and BMW. - I saw very few rickshaws during my 3 trips to most provinces

The construction is generally concrete and concrete block and wood is frowned on and not used except in minor rural buildings or temporary structures. They import wood from the U.S., Russia and SE Asia. Clay brick is being phased out for ecological reasons.

With a single pole switch used on 120vac it doesn'r matter which wire is on which screw.

I did buy another brand and it was marked correctly. Also MADE IN CHINA!
My point is, If this was built to specifications from Westinghouse, Why wasn't the mistake caught by Westinghouse or the UL?
Somebody dropped the ball and I wonder how many have been installed wrong!
Depending on how the bulb socket is designed, this could be a serious wireing mistake.

It could have been made in a Westinghouse plant in China and to meet UL requirements. That does not meet the kits were tested, since UL testing is very slow, expensive and is not normally used for quality control.

The other switch may have been made in the same plant to the same or similar standards and not just put in the same box as the Westinghouse switch.

The Chinese economy uses many more switches than the U.S. because it so big and exports increase that. That is the reason the Chinese finance the U.S. They make many more cars than the U.S. and export almost everywhere except to the U.S., but they do have a Formula race 1, since the U.S. got dropped because of lack of international market potential for the U.S.

I just hope they don't start making airplane parts or parts for electronic medical equipment! (Both of which call for very stringent quality control and testing...)

They buy new planes from Boeing and most medical equipment comes from the U.S., although many medical equipment companies are opening up plants in China. The quality control and testing is not a problem because of the number of engineers and technicians (many from the U.S.).

The worlds, largest shopping center in in China (7 stories with 900 shops, all chrome and glass selling Chinese and name brand products from around the world) operating long hours every day, similar to Japan. The parking ramp is a spiral around the center itself.

You still see some of the old China in dated travelogs, but that is a small part of the country.

Can't wait for March. This season should be fun - after all we may not have a F1 race, but we've got an F1 team this year!

Westinghouse is no longer a real company. Instead, it is a recognizable brand name that is licensed to others for use on products for sale. Whoever sold this product, simply bought the rights to market it under the Westinghouse name.
