All about quad breakers

Trying to understand quads and when you would or would not use them. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

They obviously save space. They look like a bit like two tandems side-by-side, but arranged for balancing load (phase). It looks like they could be used for 4 single branch circuits, or 2 mwbc, or a pair of 240 circuits. The toggles for the outer pair or inner pair might be mechanically joined when used for 240 circuits, but all 4 are never joined. What else?

Also the method of joining the toggles on some quad breakers is pretty flimsy and even removable, so does it really satisfy the requirement to fully disconnect all wires?
