You need to track the two wires going between the two three way switches and put the 4 way in.

The dotted box is the 4-way with the 4 terminals on the side. The two wires on the 3-ways run from and to the side terminals on the 3 ways.

actually the OP's plan will work fine. He will need to identify the travelers, of course and hook them to the 4 way he is installing in place of the 3 way. Then, in the 3 wire cable he is running to the new switch location, 2 of them will be travelers that hook to the switch on both ends, The remaining wire will be used for either the hot feed or switch leg (depending which end of the 3 way circuit he is dealing with) and will tie directly to the the hot or switch leg in the old switch box (that was connected to the 3 way switch). It will be connected to the switch only in the new location.

Step by step.

Run a 3 wire cable from one existing 3 way switch to the new location.

Remove the 3 way switch. Connect the two traveler wires to the dark terminals of a 4 way switch. Connect the matching color wires of the new cable to the gold terminals of that 4 way switch.

Connect the other two loose wires together. Install the 4 way switch.

Put the loose 3 way switch at the new location. (The matching wire ends connect to the traveler terminals as connected to the gold terminals at the 4 way switch)

Note: It is possible that you will have to undo everything (label each wire) and put ijn a bigger box to accommodate new cable at the 4 way switch. This chance is lessened if you do the work at the 3 way switch box that is less crowded.

If any wire connected to a switch terminal is white, put a band of black or red tape or stain at both ends.

OT: If you see one wire end A wire nutted (marretted) to a short length (pigtail) B in turn wire nutted to one or more wire ends C, you can undo and omit piece B and connect A directly to C. This does not always work with multiple ends A with pigtail B to multiple ends C because all the A's and all the C's might not fit in one wire nut. But be careful. Many errors and mixups occur when other wires were left loose and. say, wire end D was connected to A and C where D was not so connected before.
Stick to your lawn watering schedule until it really starts to pour. After the storm you have only the same number of rest days you always had and then you need to start watering again.
