22 year old ceiling fan

How long should a ceiling fan last? A few months ago, the ceiling fan stopped working. The light still turns on/off. After turning off the power. We removed the fan and checked to see if any wires were loose. None were. So we reattached it to the ceiling. Then eureka! The fan worked. Then we flipped the power switch to change the direction. When we turned the power back on the fan no longer worked. Arg. Any suggestions.

The motor is probably kicking the bucket, maybe there is a lose winding wire so it will intermittently work. I was 2, shoving paper clips in sockets and scaring the crap out of my mom when that fan was installed.

Time for a new one I would say, it's done more then it's time. :P

Yeah, it's terminal.
Apparently it served honorably.

Before putting in a new one check that the voltage to the box is within specs, 120 v +/- 5% or 10%.
