10-3 wire to a 3-prong dryer outlet

Wire: Black, Red, White, bare ground.
Outlet: two straight blades and L-shape

Black to one straight side, Red to the other.

What should I wire to the L-shape, ground or neutral, and what should I do with the spare wire?

Thanks!

New dryer? You match up the dryer INTERNALS with what the house provides.

If it's YOUR old house and a NEW dryer...
then upgrade the feed to match up.

Is the wire you are referring to the dryer cable, or the cable back to the service panel?

If the wire back to the panel does not have 3 conductors plus a bare ground then it should be upgraded.

Hi Dave,
The wire back to the service panel has 4 wires: Black, Red, White, and bare ground. I'm wondering is it safe to connect this to a dryer outlet that has only 3 connection points and if so, how to wire the outlet?

Old dryer into an older house that got rewired. I guess they upgraded the wiring to the dryer with newer wire.

If I go to a 4 prong outlet to match the 4-way wiring coming in from the service panel, how do I attach a 4-prong cord to replace the 3-prong cord on the dryer itself?

Ask the Landlord to replace the receptacle with the older 3 wire type.
Or do that yourself and on your own hook.

Install a 4 wire dryer receptacle and a 4 wire dryer cord.

Thanks for the reply. The question then becomes, how do I install a 4 pronged cord onto a dryer that has a 3 pronged cord?

The cord white wire attaches to the neutral of the dryer, the cord green attaches to the frame of the dryer. Remove the strap between the neutral terminal and the frame of the dryer.
