Trane xb10 hard start capacitor started on fire

What would cause my Supco Hard Start CAP to start fire on my Trane XB10 Heat Pump? I have had capacitor problems in the past but nothing like this. Trane xb10 hard start capacitor started on fire-hard-start-wiring.jpg

It was wired wrong or a power surge ( lightning).

It was a crystal clear day around 10am and I also have a surge protector installed.

Re: Trane xb10 hard start capacitor started on fire

those kits have a device at the top that take the capacitor out of the circuit after startup, it's a ptc device that gets very hot, resistance goes way up and it restricts current flow.

looks like it failed in a bad way.

They use a relay to disengage the capacitor. It either stuck closed, or started to cycle to often. (it happens) The result is a great demonstration on the disadvantages of using electrolytic caps with AC. Quite spectacular. Not to many models use a thyrister, but they can fail too.

Replace it, double check the current draw of the compressor. Move on with your life.

Cheers!

those cheap superboosts don't have a real relay.

they have another product that does as well as a backup timer if the relay fails.

I've seen a lot of thos two wire ones fail. They actually lock up the compressor when they do. You can remove it and compressor will start right up. I imagine the compressor was trying to start, the relay was stuck in the start position for a long period of time. I have never seen one burn up like that

That's the higher end e-series they list. i didn't know they were called superboost as well.

there's a series that doesn't use a real relay - what the op has in the pic, a spp6.

"Hard Start Kit Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Relay and Start Capacitor SPP Series"

the series that you have a pic of does and sounds like a good product:

SPP6E--E SERIES HARD START
Electronic Potential Relay/Start Capacitor Combination Hard Start Kit with electronic timing circuit

Re: Trane xb10 hard start capacitor started on fire

Yes, the E series is the only type that most of the suppliers around here carry.

However, i don't have much issue with the other types. It's extremely mature tech. (old style cathode tube TVs used it for degaussing.)
@BayouRunner I've seen quite a few. New and old compressors. Overall, it's fairly rare compared to the number that are installed. Usually they just vent, but the electrolytic is flammable, so it catches fire sometimes. If the cap is shorted, and the relay stuck, it's essentially shorting across the original cap. In essence, electrically removing the cap, and therefore no start starting torque.

Cheers!
