Shut off the equipment, your likely to short something with bare wire touching.
Do you have separate systems for heating and cooling? Why is there 2 bundles of conductors running to that one thermostat?

Please don’t make me go back in the crawl space

So I was replacing a thermostat... very easy job... until I pulled too hard on the wire in the wall and pulled out a good length of it. I finished wiring in the thermostat and turn the power back on and the thermostat doesn’t work. I triple checked my wiring is right, but it’s not turning on. I went in the crawl space and found the wire but it was still secured to a support beam so it wasn’t unplugged... not sure what to do. The old thermostat doesn’t work now either. There seems to be an old hvac connection that was hidden in the wall? Or maybe it’s supposed to connect to this. Not sure?

It’s one system, I have no idea why there are two bundles. When the cord came out of the wall that came with it.

It looks like you have an older 5-wire cable that may have been abandoned and replaced by the newer 6-wire (well, really 8-wire) cable that is connected to the thermostat.

Are you sure you found the other end of the correct cable when you were in the crawl space?

That seems to be the case.

Yes, they were together in the crawl space. Along with all of the spiders that ever existed.

Re: Pulled too hard... what Am I looking at?

Was the second bundle landed on the thermostat or was it just sitting in the wall?
Is there a similar bundle at the equipment?

I believe that was an old system that was abandoned?it was just in the wall. The 8 wire system is what’s wired to the thermostat

Is that’s the case just leave it be.
Is the other end of the abandoned wire connected to anything?

Could maybe check the loose wire(s) for line/signal voltage to confirm it's not in use?
