No flange on register boot?

Have to add new vent to a room I'm redoing as the old one was done poorly. I had gotten some advice to use a boot with a flange but the store didn't have any and I would rather not wait for shipping.
I'm also guessing since nothing in store had a flange it's not as common. Am I supposed to cut the end and fold back flanges? Don't I need something for the grille to screw into? I'm guessing this is a simple question but couldn't figure out the correct Google wording. Thanks!

Re: No flange on register boot?

Often the flanges on the boots are split on the corners for the bend. If you need the flanges wider, you can cut the notches deeper and carefully bend the metal .
