Need ideas for heat insulator for exhaust system.

I'm thinking about setting up a generator exhaust system similar to this one:

Image from: rvupgradestore.com

The vertical pipe would be PVC drain pipe. To mitigate heat transfer from the three aluminum straps that connect the metal exhaust pipe to the PVC drain pipe, I want to put some type of insulation material between the aluminum straps and the PVC drain pipe. Something about 1/8" thick. Then only the bolts holding the aluminum straps to the PVC drain pipe would be conducting heat to the PVC drain pipe.

Any ideas?

How hot are the gasses that will flow through this pipe? If you don't know, then you have no business doing what you're thinking of doing.

PVC pipe has a max temp rating of 140F.

I can't tell for sure, but I would take a guess that the grey pipe in that picture is at least CPVC, which is made to handle a higher temperature (200F). Even that's cutting it close, since generator exhaust temperatures can sometimes get to over 1000F.

I think you might want to go back to the drawing board.

I just did a quick search on that product. I don't know what kind of pipe they use, but I did find that Camping World sells the whole setup for $128 with free shipping. That seems incredibly reasonable to me. Sure, you could probably rig up something yourself for 1/4 the price, but is it really worth it???
