Mini split btu's vs portable

It is taking longer to get new AC then I hoped. Busy time of the year and all. Luckily I already have a couple of window units on hand. So we are not dying. I needed one more unit so I got a refurbed Toshiba 8000 btu portable. It is "working" but it is struggling.

My question is are btu's the same across different types of AC? Would a 8000 btu mini split perform similarly? So far I have got back one estimate that had a regular AC/furnace system and a mini split option. It called for a 9000 btu unit in the room with the portable 8000 currently.

FYI if anyone is curious. They quoted $10,840 for the exact same system the big box contractor quoted $12,500. Also, they(non big box) quoted $16,640 for a floor mounted Fujitsu Halycon mini split system.

Re: Mini split btu's vs portable

the single portables which use indoor air to cool the condenser and in turn exhaust it outside have much lower effective capacity than rated.

franky, they shouldn't be legal, they're horribly inefficient and would never comply with the same efficiency standards window units have to.

otherwise, btus are btus.

Never jump out safeties - especially pressure switches - on a furnace for testing with fuel supply on; use a meter. Do not troubleshoot with live line voltage present unless there's no alternative.
