Kitchen soffit with duct vents

Hi everyone!

I just bought my first house and found out about this site. The amount of info being shared is great!

I would like to know if anyone has thoughts on how to reroute some ducts to get rid of the soffits in my kitchen. I've opened the main offender and this is what I see. Second to last pic is of space immediately above the system.

Is it possible to run the ducts between the joists of the second floor? I am also planning on taking down the wall (not load bearing) to the right of the soffit, so moving the vents would have to happen.

Please let me know if you need any extra info in order to give me some input.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

Thanks for your reply, I feared that.

Any alternatives that you can think of so I can cut it back at least a bit? My ceilings are 8', so this makes the place look even smaller than it is.

How many rooms does the duct just inside the cut out dry wall supply?

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

It supplies 2 rooms - kitchen and living room. I am planning on taking down the wall separating them, so I could possibly get rid of one of the vents (if that is something that can be done).

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

Can probably do both rooms with 1 vent/register. It will need to be a larger one then what either room currently has though.

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

Good to know. That will help cutting it back at least.

Do you have any extra advice? I am trying to do this myself, but I also have a quote for about $800 to get rid of it (that hurts).

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

Removing the duct will be easy when the sofit is removed. Until you can reach the point that the duct and plenum attach. And can post pics of that. Not much I can tell you.

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

Took me longer than expected to open it up some more (lots of other projects going on).

First pic is of opened space to the left of kitchen vent. You can see the ducts that go up to supply the second floor in the back (right). Directly on the other side of that is the living room vent.

Next pic is of the (I'm assuming) supply plenum. The piece furthest in the back is part of the actual unit. It's inside that small closet on my first post's pics.

A 12x10 Hart&Cooley 92HVO register should work. High CFM and good throw to cover both rooms. Adjustable vanes for left and right air direction control.

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

Great!! That soffit needs to go asap.

How difficult would this project be for someone who has never messed with duct work before? I am a very quick learner. Do you have a preferred place to get the parts necessary?

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

I get all my parts t HVAC supply houses. So can't tell you any place for a home owner.

How difficult will depend on how mechanically inclined you are. But not very hard at all.

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

I am pretty adventurous as long as it doesn't involve electrical, gas or plumbing!

I really appreciate all your feedback. I'll do some research to see where I can buy the part you recommended and the rest of the stuff I'll need.

Have a great rest of your week, beenthere!

Re: Kitchen soffit with duct vents

It looks like the one bare pipe is B-vent. That would be the exhaust for the furnace. (the one with the firestop / clearance offset in the floor above.)

I also see water and maybe Gas there too.

Home improvement type stores will have the tools.

Cheers!
