I purchased a hone a couple of years ago with a Rheem AC system. The performance (cooling) was good until last year.
I called a HVAC company and they came out and said my evap coil was clogged and needed to be replaced.
I went up this week and examined the filter facing side of the evap coil and it did have a lot of crud on it. I vacuumed it out and then blew compressed air in it. I plan on using some indoor evap foam cleaner to get it even cleaner.
While I was in there I noticed that the air handler/coil had a plate with two thumb screws that can be removed to hols a filter. I opened it up, and there was no filter in there.
The unit is a air handler is a Rheem RCGA-24A2GH14. Before this unit is a Carrier Model AIRA Electronic Air Cleaner. I did clean that out last year (screens and plate box).
Question: Should there be the filter in the air handler unit? Or was the air handler filter removed because they installed the electronic air cleaner before it? (e.g., mesh filter not needed if the electronic one is used).
There is a ton of dust in this system. I do not see how the system can filter the air without some better media to trap dust, etc. It just doesn't seem right that the electronic unit is the only filter.
